Small Update.
Things to come.
I wanted to make this post to kind of update those of you who are kind enough to read what I write. I have not been nearly as consistent as I wish when it comes to writing and posting on here. So I wanted to let everyone know what’s coming, and more than anything, hold myself accountable. If I post that I’m going to write about it, now I have to keep my word, kind of thing. So with that being said, here’s some stuff to look forward to. As many of you may have caught by now, this Substack isn’t about anything in particular; for example, I love to write about comics, but I also enjoy making them and posting them here. In short, Lingering Liminality is just my journal, a place to write what I want to write about. So you’ll see with the projects I’m working on; frankly, they are all over the place. From essays on comics I love to movies, music, shows, all the above.
Brubaker and Phillips.
This one will most likely be posted before any of these and probably right after this update. This one will be fully centered around the duo of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, and my favorite comics they’ve done, from Criminal to Where the Body Was. It will be similar to my recent Ice Cream Man post, a place for me to just talk about comics, and this one was very fun to write because it gave me an excuse to read nothing but Brubaker and Phillips for about a month straight, and who wouldn’t want to do that?
Franz Kafka.
This is by far the one that will take the longest to write and come out. You see, I have been quietly working on an essay about Franz Kafka for years now in the back of my mind. What started as an analysis of The Metamorphosis (my favorite short story ever) has quickly become an essay all about the man who wrote it. Kafka is one of my favorite authors; I find his work to be extremely relatable. What that says about me, I don’t know. This essay will be not just about The Metamorphosis, but also his diaries, all of the work that was published posthumously after his death, the whole genre of Kafkaesque, just a post all about Kafka. As I said, this one is the most exciting for me, and I can’t wait to sit down to write and put it out for y’all to read. I’ve had a note written on my whiteboard that says, “write Kafka essay” for the past three years.
Fire Walk With Me.
What can I say about Twin Peaks that hasn’t been said already? I know, I know, but I have a really fun idea involving a road trip, the Double R Diner, and the impact Twin Peaks and David Lynch have had on my life personally. It’s going to take me a while to write, and it’s going to be a long one; I can tell you that, but I’m really hoping it will be a fun one to read.
Batman: Night Cries.
This’ll be more of an analysis than a flat-out essay or recommendation. Batman: Night Cries is a 1992 graphic novel unlike any Batman story you’ve ever read. A dark, disturbing, and brutally honest tale about the evils hiding within our world. This is the one I’ve been trying to write for a while now; despite it being a great story, it’s truly such a hard read and even harder to write about. But I believe that a story like Night Cries needs to be talked about more, so that’s what I’ll try to do.
Urban Legends.
I’ve always been interested in Urban Legends, not as much in the stories behind the legends- Bloody Mary, Ghost Ships, Alexandria’s Genesis, things like that. No, I’m interested in the effects of urban legends, the reasons they were created in the first place, why we as humans find them so endearing, so scary, and so hopeful. Similar to my essay, What does a ghost mean to you? Which you could read here
Comics Projects.
I’m always working on comics in the background. I have some cool one-pagers cooking up with a couple of friends that I’m really excited about. I’ve also been quietly working on what is, in my opinion, my best idea yet, which I am still trying to figure out how I want to go about it before I pitch it to an artist and whatnot. But for now I’ll call it Project OGT, and I’m really excited to work on this one in the future.
Those aren’t all the things I’m working on, but just a couple I plan on doing sooner rather than later, and I really just wanted to put it out there so I can make sure I actually do all of them. They will all be coming out, but maybe not in the same order, and also may have some other things posted in between them, but oh well.
